The Open Door

Revolutionizing housing and at-risk support services in the region!

The Need

The Open Door will provide necessary services for those at-risk of or already experiencing homelessness.

According to the 2022 Guilford County Continuum of Care Point In Time Count, 426 people experienced homelessness in Guilford County. Of the 426, 270 of those individuals were males and 62 were veterans, both populations currently served by Open Door Ministries.

In October of 2023, Open Door Ministries gave emergency food to 522 individuals in need. That is more than double the amount of emergency food distributed over the summer. Currently, there is a waitlist of over 100 people who require the services provided by Open Door Ministries. Based on this data, there continues to be a pressing need for those experiencing homelessness to access these services. The Open Door will be that safe haven for these individuals.

Expanded
Services

Open Door Ministries is expanding its services to create The Open Door, a space that will provide comprehensive support to its clients seven days a week under one roof.

In addition to expanding shelter capacity and access to basic necessities, the center will offer a range of services that will include education, vocational training, financial skill development, case management, staff support, psychological services, healthcare, food service, communication services, volunteer support services, and shelter. The goal is to make homelessness rare, brief, and nonrecurring, and to achieve this, clients will receive individualized service plans and support that provides them with the resources needed to heal.

The center will partner with organizations such as Davidson Community College and Guilford Technical Community College to meet the diverse needs of its client through a combination of on-site and referral-based services. It will expand case management to include social workers with specific knowledge of each situation and will refer clients to other organizations that can help, such as legal support. The staff will expand to include new roles, and partnerships with other agencies will increase the number of service providers on-site.
