The Man Behind the Soup

Glen Howell is the Assistant Manager of Hospitality and Church Kitchen Manager at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in High Point. Since September of 2020, he shows up to Open Door Ministries every week with 8 Gallons of soup that he has made for the men at the shelter and the surrounding community. So far, he has provided 440 gallons and his favorite part of what he does is to see everyone enjoy his food. His favorite soup to enjoy is roasted sweet corn chowder. Homestyle vegetable soup, which is his grandmother’s recipe, is his favorite soup to make for other people.

Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church has had a long-standing relationship with Open Door Ministries, and it is Pastor Jeff Patterson’s goal for the church to do what it can to help Open Door Ministries succeed. After the Pandemic really shut things down in 2020, Glen’s manager, Cindy Dominick, wanted a way to keep the church connected to the community and they came up with a program to take soup, bread, and dessert to the elderly of the church that hadn’t or couldn’t make it out of the house yet. To further help the community, that evolved into also making soup weekly for Open Door Ministries.

In his spare time, Glen likes to spend quality time with his wife Alysia, son Derek and fur babies Peanut and Bodi. He loves being a home baker and channeling his inner Elvis and Frank while entertaining at retirement communities. We would like to thank Glen and Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church for finding ways to support and love those in the community. And if you ever get a chance to try it, Glen really does make a great bowl of soup!
